I’m delighted to introduce you to my latest pattern which is a beautiful lace inspired floral embroidery. It’s the perfect design to embellish a plain t-shirt or as I did for the piece here, embroider on a different colored fabric and then use as a large patch to cover an old print or stain.
I developed this embroidery design last summer when I was struggling with severe anxiety and needed a project that was both beautiful and able to keep my hands busy. For me, needlepoint is a great way to relax so I designed this piece which would keep me occupied for a few hours.
The Inspiration for the floral embroidery pattern
I’ve had this design in my mind for a while now. You may remember the t-shirt I up-cycled a few years ago for my daughter where I used old floral print leggings as the letters of the love appliqué. I really liked how the floral print looked as letters and felt it would translate nicely as a lace-like embroidery.
Perfect for Beginners
The embroidery design is quite simple to do so even if you’re new to needlepoint, you’ll enjoy it. The design comes in 3 sizes in PDF format which you can print out and use graphite paper to transfer onto a T-shirt. Alternatively if you have printable water soluble stabilizer, you can print the embroidery design directly onto the paper and stick it onto the t-shirt for an easy embroidery. This works well if you want to embroider onto a dark coloured top. Once you wet your t-shirt, the paper dissolves.
Once you’ve transferred the design, place a hoop around the letter you’re going to work on and begin stitching. This design only uses 2 stitches. The chain stitch for the outline of the letter and the backstitch for the flowers.
This is about a 6 hour project as each letter took about 1 1/2 hours to embroider. I usually worked about 30 minutes each sitting and found that my anxiety levels diminished dramatically each time. There’s actually quite a bit of research on the scientific benefits of hand work which if fascinating and I’m working to gather and share my findings with you in an upcoming post.
