Caroline Hurd

Fashion Designer, sewing instructor and mama to three beautiful children, I am passionate about creating a life of beauty and sustainability.

My first memory of designing and making clothes probably dates back to when I was twelve years old when I up-cycled an old set of jacquard drapes into a skirt. Little did I know this child’s play would turn into a life long passion of learning and making.

I have a BA in Business & Fashion design from ÉSMM, Canada and a MA Fashion with a focus on designing for different body types from the Surrey Institute of Art & Design, UK. I apprenticed on Savile Row and at Marina Rinaldi before returning to Montreal to work as a designer for established Montreal retail chains Tristan and Jacob.

In 2003, I fell in love and followed my sweetheart to beautiful Vancouver, BC. I traded in my heels for hiking boots to run in the wild forest of the Pacific North West while raising 3 beautiful children. As a full time parent for over 10 years, and living mainly on a single salary budget, I found that mending and up-cycling my family’s clothes was both economical and the creative outlet I needed. Over the years, I have dived into the heritage and legacy my ancestors have created in the fiber arts to re-interpret various techniques and designs in order to embellish our clothes. What many people might have deemed bound for the trash, I would transform into beautiful and stylish objects that were boutique worthy.

Today, through Modern Mending, I am happy to share my knowledge and designs, so that you too can make your loved clothes last.
