I’m excited to share with you the brainchild I have been working on for the past year now. Although, if I think about it, it’s been a work in progress for the better part of my adult life. Even more so, during my parenting years (inset proud mama of 3), which has spanned over a decade already. But before we talk about this little project, I need to make a confession.
I Love clothes
Trained as a fashion designer, I love good design. I love the play of colors, textures and how a beautifully crafted outfit makes me feel when I’m wearing it. I love how a good pair of heels or boots acts as a pedestal to the look I’ve put together and changes my posture in just the right way so that I don’t just walk, I sway. For me, fashion is a way to add artistry to the everyday. It’s my real life dress-up play.
What I don’t like is the throwaway culture that has infiltrated the fashion universe I love, like a ravaging cancer. We are trading the sartorial joy of playing with our clothes for instant gratification, through impulse buying of cheap disposable clothes. And for the sake of what? There’s no need to have a new outfit in order to get the instant gratification of an Instagram post or for compliments at a dinner party. Our need to always strive to be of the moment is costing our wallet, and more importantly our planet’s good health.
We have lost touch with the purpose of our clothes. Our clothes need to serve us well and reflect what we want to project to others. Something you wear 7 times will never give you the same confidence or satisfaction that a long time staple can provide. This is why the intelligent shopper takes his or her time, buys quality and takes care of its clothes. Mending is an essential tool of the well styled.
Now let me introduce you to my brainchild. A bonus tool that goes beyond mending. I propose we use the accidental stain or tear as an opportunity to embellish, transform and redefine the look of the original piece. Welcome to curated creative mending.
