I’m delighted to share with you one of the designs I have developed which I am most proud of. An old pair of jeans which I have upcycled into an apron.
The Brief
A little over a year ago, my husband asked me if I could make him an apron he could use when barbecuing and also when he did work around the house. Given my interest in sustainable design, I challenged myself to develop an apron made out of an existing garment that was perhaps destined for the landfill.
Transforming, or upcycling, I believe is the most challenging form of design because there is a high risk of wasting a large part of the fabric. When upcycling, the ideal scenario is to use up the entire garment so to avoid waste. I’m happy to say that this design incorporates more than 95% of the original jeans which I feel is a tremendous success.
The design
The apron, which is adjustable at the neckline so as to fit everyone, is made from an old pair of Diesel jeans that belonged to my husband. I developed the first prototype a year ago and my husband and I have been using it ever since. Denim is a great material for an apron because it is thick. So when cooking or cleaning, it protects our clothes well. My husband likes that it is sturdy enough to bring in the workshop.
Comissions Available
Although this is a labour of love, I feel that the end result definitely justifies the time spent to make it. The apron shown here is a commission which will be sent off this week to it’s new owner. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!
