Over the course of the summer I will be writing posts to present you with a more in depth look at all the patterns that I have developed for this first season of Modern Mending. Today, I would like to introduce you to the Love Appliqué Pattern.
Do you find in your closet or your kids closet, T-shirts that have too many stains or holes to be deemed wearable? Is it ready to be passed on to the next child or a friend but has lost a bit of it’s shine? The LOVE stencil is a DIY project that is specifically designed to solve this problem. By covering or simply moving the eye away from the stain, this 3 to 4 hour project is one of the quickest ways to make something hand made for yourself or your child, that will be cherished for years… Well at least until he or she grows out of it and it’s ready to be passed on.
Perfect for the novice and expert sewist
If you have never sewn, this is the perfect starter project for you. No sewing machine necessary, simply a few basic tools that you will find useful to have on hand if you don’t already own them. You will learn how to do the herringbone stitch and will have mastered it by the time you complete the letter E. Think of me as your personal sewing Mr. Miyagi. This is one of the most useful basic stitches to work on stretch fabric. It’s also the stitch used for invisible hems so you will be learning a new skill that will be very useful if ever you need to shorten a skirt or dress pants.
Have a look at the supplies you need for this project below. It’s also a sneak peak into what the hand illustrations in the tutorial looks like. You can read and see more illustrations here.
If you’re a seasoned sewist, the tutorial is sprinkled with insider tips I have learned over the years training as a designer and working in the industry. I’ve also developed a few techniques of my own that make the work of appliqué on jersey practically foolproof.
Patterns graded for all sizes
The downloadable PDF comes with 5 graded patterns for the kids version so it fits children’s clothes sized 18m to 14. The adult version comes with 3 graded patterns to fit perfectly, whether you are a size XXS or 6X. You can read more about my love for designing for plus sizes here. I also offer both kids and adult patterns in a special bundled price in the shop so you save money and get all the sizes available.
Imagine the possibilities.
Sustainable and zero waste DIY
Have a look at the images below to see how I used an old pair of leggins to make the letters. This is up-cycling and zero waste crafting at it’s fashionable best.
Click the link below to go to my Etsy shop and add the LOVE appliqué pattern and Tutorial to your basket. It will be the best investment in personal skills development you will make this year! And that, most definitely will be something to cherish for years to come.
Happy Mending!
